AL contributions undeniable: PM

Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said no one could deny her party’s contributions to Bangladesh history as it brought achievements in every field for the country’s people, reports UNB.
“Bangladesh has achieved its independence under the leadership of Bangabandhu and Awami League as it united the whole nation irrespective of party affiliation,” she said.
The AL chief was addressing a discussion meeting marking the 66th founding anniversary of Awami League, one of the largest and oldest political organizations of this subcontinent, at the Bangabandhu International conference Center (BICC) here in the afternoon. Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting.
The Prime Minister said those who once had neglected Bangladesh now consider it as a role model of development and it has been possible only because of Bangladesh Awami League.
Hasina said the people of Bangladesh get something whenever AL assumes office. “We’ve ensured food security…Bangladesh is moving ahead and will continue to move.”
Recalling the contributions of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to the Land Boundary Agreement (LBA), Hasina said the then Awami League government in 1974 had ratified the LBA in parliament through the 3rd amendment to the constitution.
“India has recently ratified the LBA 40 years after Bangladesh did.  Had Bangabandhu been alive, he could have realized the LBA from India much earlier,” the PM told the meeting.
After Bangabandhu’s assassination in 1975 with most of his family members, Hasina alleged many governments, including that of Ziaur Rahman, HM Ershad and Khaleda Zia, had grabbed power and demonstrated their anti-Indian statements, but could not dare to raise the just demands of Bangladesh before India. Even, she said, they could not raise their voice regarding LBA.
She said after assuming office after long 21 years in 1996, her government took initiatives for gaining the maritime boundary verdict over Myanmar and India as well as settling the LBA issue by India.  But, the efforts came to a halt soon after BNP-Jamaat grabbed power in 2001.
She said again forming government in 2009 the Awami League took initiative and gained vast resources through winning the maritime boundary verdict over Myanmar and India through maintaining friendly relations with them.
Hasina termed Awami League a party of soil and people, and said Bangladesh emerged as an independent country as there was a powerful and pro-people organization like Awami League.
