A suspected member of banned militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team reportedly confessed to his involvement before a Dhaka court yesterday in the murder attempt on publisher and blogger Ahmed Rashid Tutul, reports UNB.
Metropolitan Magistrate M Ahsan Habib recorded the statement of Shihab alias Saiful alias Sumon alias Shakib under section of 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure after Inspector Bahauddin
of the Detective Branch (DB) produced him before the court on completion of a five-day remand. The court also sent the suspected militant to jail.
On June 16, detectives arrested Shakib from the Airport bus stand area of the capital. Later, he was put on a five-day remand for interrogation over the attack on Tutul.
Earlier on October 31 last, three people, including Shuddhoswar publisher Ahmed Rashid Tutul, were hacked by unidentified miscreants at the publishing house in the city’s Lalmatia area.
Another publisher, Faisal Arefin Dipon, was also attacked and killed on the same day and around the same time at his office of ‘Jagrity Prokashoni’ in Aziz Super Market at Shahbagh.
Police suspect that Ansarullah Bangla Team was behind both attacks. A Tk 200,000 bounty was announced for Sumon’s capture. He was caught on the night of June 15.
