The deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Syed Nurul Islam, said yesterday that the recent threat to the Ramakrishna Mission in Dhaka, issued by someone who identified himself as ‘AB Siddique’, was a hoax.
Some people with vested interests apparently used Siddique’s name to harass him, he said. A Ramakrishna Mission priest had received a death threat on June 16, apparently from the followers of the terrorist outfit Islamic State. The threat came in the form of a letter amid the murders of minorities across the country.
The Hindu priest said the sender of the letter ordered him not to preach his religion, or risk being hacked to death with machetes. The priest filed a general diary (GD) at Wari Police Station, said sub-inspector Monir Ahmed.
“We have collected video footage which shows a wiry man delivering the letter at the mission’s gate,” Ahmed told journalists at his office in the city’s Sayedabad area yesterday.
The letter was signed by ‘AB Siddique from Kishorganj district’.
“We found out this AB Siddique, but we noticed that his build did not resemble that of the letter deliverer’s. Nor did his handwriting match the one on the letter,” said Ahmed.
After serving in the Bangladesh Army, Siddique started living in his ancestral home in the village and started a business in Kishorganj. He sold his wife’s house in Khilkhet in Dhaka and set up a petrol pump and a hatchery with the money.
Some local groups recently lodged a complaint against Siddique with police, alleging that he was a drug peddler. They also made several other complaints, which eventually turned out to be false.
Siddique told journalists that he had informed police about the false complaints lodged against him.
