Promising star Rajib Das sounded the board for twice, as Abahani Limited trounced their archrivals Mohammedan Sporting Club by 4-2 in their Super Six phase match of the Green Delta Premier Division Hockey League yesterday.
For Abahani, Kasif Ali opened the account and Rajib doubled the advantage to lead first half while Shafakat Rasool and Rajib Das scored one each again after the breather. Rasel Mahmud Jimy and Mohammed Irfan reduced one each for Mohammedan.
Held at the Maulana Bhashani Hockey Stadium, by virtue of this victory, Abahani pushed the points tally to 29 points just three points behind table toppers Usha.
After suffering the defeat Mohammedan have almost thrown out of the championship clash while they could manage only 26 points from 12 matches.
However, the traditional rivals encounter was set up with some pace with Mohammedan obtained the first penalty corner of the match but could not utilise the initial chance. But soon Abahani gained the control of the match and pinned down their opponents into their territory.
Mohammedan could have taken the lead early when Omar Bhutta unbelievably failed to score from the easiest chance of the day when the Pakistani recruit could not contact a Jimy cross from one yard distance from the goal line.
Abahani Limited just overcoming the initial assaults took the lead through Kasif Ali when he converted a penalty corner on 22nd minute.
Rajib made an excellent finish off a combined move of Shakil Abbasi and Rummon Sarkar on 27th minute to double the margin (2-0).
Mohammedan trailing by 0-2 tried to bounce back with Jimy scoring a nice goal from a long Salman Hossain pass on 42nd (2-1).
But Abahani again enlarged the margin with Shafkat Rasool made the ally 3-1 just five minutes later when Rumman Sarkar released a ball from the midfield into open space for unmarked Pakistani forward.
Struggling Mohammedan again reduced the margin on 58th minute while Mohammed Imran converted a penalty corner (3-2).
Rajib Das, the youngster, who crossed his Secondary Education Certificate (SSC) level this year, struck his second and the fourth for Abahani on 62nd minute to close the team’s score sheet (4-2) to keep Abahani unbeaten against Mohammedan this season. In the Club tournament Abahani won by same margin and their first leg match ended on 2-2.
