Rooppur Nuclear Plant gets site licence to start work

Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA) yesterday issued site licence to Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Project to start the main construction work.
The licence issuing ceremony was organised by BAERA at a hotel in the capital. BAERA chairman handed over the licence to Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC).
During ceremony, Naiyyum Chowdhury, chairman of BAERA, handed over the license to BAEC Chairman M Ali Zulqarnain.
Speaking on the occasion, Naiyyum Chowdhury said: “Giving site licence is not the end of the journey, rather it’s the end of the beginning only.”
M Ali Zulqarnain said they will make sure that the works in the project will be conducted on time and in proper manner.
Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Yeafesh Osman, minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, said that that implementation of the plant will make Bangladesh a proud member of the nuclear world.
To ensure the full proof security and safety measure of the plant we are not going to take expertise knowledge from the Russia but also from India. Mashiur Rahman, economic adviser to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said that components of the project are unique.
“It’s not like that you go to market and buy components for the implementation of the project. There are only handfuls of countries which manufacture these components for nuclear power plant. Russia is one of them.”
Rahman said that Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is a very sensitive project. “Highest levels of safety regulation measures are taken in every step of the implementation process.”
Deputy Chairman of Russian Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority Rostechnadzor, Alexey Ferapontov, said that the society trusts the regulatory authority of any country to esnure security and safety for them.
Both the regulatory authorities of Bangladesh and Russia understand that. “We work together to ensure the safety of the nuclear power plant in Bangladesh,” he said.
An essential point of our cooperation is that we have been taking all sort of decision regarding the safety of the plant based of scientific data and facts.
