One held with 596 cartoons of cigarettes
A Customs Preventive Team arrested a man along with 596 cartoons of contraband cigarettes at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital on Tuesday morning.
The arrestee was identified as Alam, 30, a resident of Munshiganj district.
Assistant commissioner (Preventive) Rezaul Karim of the customs said Alam came to Dhaka from Sharjah by a flight of Air Arabia G9540 that landed around 8:55am. Tipped off, customs officials challenged Alam and recovered the cigarettes of Esse brand from his five trolley bags. The market value of the cigarettes is Tk18 lakh.
Three food shops fined
Three food shops were fined Taka 13,000 on Monday in Rajshahi city on charges of selling unhygienic and sub-standard food.
A team of the Department of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) conducted raids at BSCIC estate and New Market areas and found Bengal Bakery, Ahar Food Industry and Bhai Bhai Restaurant for preparing, possessing and selling food and other consumer items in unhygienic condition.
Subsequently, the team fined the shop owners Taka 13,000 and realised the fines instantly.
Apurba Kumar Adhikary, Assistant Director of DNCRP, said such drive against the violations of consumers rights will continue in the days ahead.
Meanwhile, Rajshahi City Corporation conducted mobile courts in different areas of the city and its Executive Magistrate Sadequr Rahman found eight business establishments law violators.
The court fined them a total of Taka 20,000 and realized the fined money instantly.
Mobile court fines four for cheating people in Ctg
A mobile court of Chittagong District Administration (CDA) on Monday fined four persons for cheating people by making fake visas.
CDA executive magistrate Tahmilur Rahman fined Ashrafur Rahman, 25, Monir Forazi, 35, Harun Sikdar, 38 and Abdul Halim, 41, Taka one lakh each.
The court also awarded them with imprisonments for different terms on the same ground.
They were fined as per the Overseas Employment and Migrant Welfare Act, 2013 for deceiving people in name of sending them abroad, the executive magistrate said.
They were arrested from Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport on Sunday night when they were locked in an altercation with a passenger at the airport.
