Currently, there are 77,000 registered MBBS physicians and 6,976 dental surgeons (BDS) in the country, Health Minister Mohammad Nasim said yesterday, reports BSS.
Replying to a written starred question raised by treasury bench member M Abdul Latif (Chittagong-11) in the House, the health minister said the number of allocated nurses is 22,939.
He, however, admitted that the number of doctors and nurses is not adequate in comparison to the demand.
Nasim said the programme for recruitment of doctors through BCS examination is underway. “Ten thousand new posts for nurses have been created and recruitment of nurses in 3616 vacant posts is under process,” he said.
Responding to a written question from Awami League lawmaker Dr Md Enamur Rahman (Dhaka-11), the health minister said blood bank will be set up in all upazila hospitals in phases.
“Arrangements for blood bank in each medical college hospital and district hospitals are being made, while blood bank will be set up in all upazila hospitals in phases,” he said.
Nasim said blood transfusion centre has now been operational at upazila-level hospitals, where blood transfusion is done through cross matching and screening (HIV, malaria, Hepatitis B and C and VDRL).
Another reports adds; Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim yesterday said the work on upgrading each of the upazila health
complexes to a 50-bed hospital from 31-bed one is going on as part of the present government’s commitment of providing improved medicare services to the people.
The health minister said this while replying to a scripted question of treasury bench member Kamrul Ashraf Khan in the Jatiya Sangsad (JS).
Nasim said with a view to providing specialised medical treatment at the upgraded upazila health complexes different posts of junior consultant of child specialist, gynecologist and eye specialist were created. He said the work on appointing doctors to the created post is going on.
In replying to another question from treasury bench lawmaker Nizam Uddin Hazari, the health minister said the government has no plan to set up new medical colleges in the country at this moment.
