Conjoined newborn twins die

STAFF REPORTER

Conjoined twin girls died in the capital less than a week after they were born. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) had been treating them.
They were born on June 17 in a private clinic in Jessore with two heads, separate hands, legs, kidneys but just one heart. BSMMU’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Kamrul Hasan Khan with his own initiative brought the twins to Dhaka on June 19. Since then the twins have been under surveillance of BSMMU’s Professor Md Abdul Mannan, chairman of Department of Neonatology. After their birth the twins had been suffering from  Sepsis (Blood Infection) and heart complexities. They were being treated in intensive care unit. They died in the morning. Their bodies were not separated. Professor Md Abdul Mannan confirmed it to The Independent.
Doctors said they tried hard but could not save the twins’ lives. They were suffering from Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), a heart problem that occurs soon after birth in some babies. In PDA, abnormal blood flow occurs between two of the major arteries connected to the heart.
The twins’ parents Kamruzzaman Montu, a farmer, and Rina Khatun, house wife, live in the Ujirpur under Chaugasa of Jessore district. They have two sons and a daughter.
Conjoined siblings are identical twins who in rare cases are born with their skin and internal organs fused together, according to the University of Maryland Medical Centre website.
About half are stillborn, and the survival rate is between five and 25 per cent.
