Pedestrians ignore modern dustbins

The Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) has installed 21 modern dustbins at important points of the city. However, there seems to be little initiative on the part of the people to use those.
The SCC engineering department has built each dustbin for Tk. 8,500. They will gradually add more such dustbins to the city.
Many people argued that had the authorities imposed a fine or taken other action for not using the bins, people would have been more compliant.
SCC chief executive officer Enamul Habib claimed that these are early days and there is not much awareness among people about hygiene. Things will change gradually, he expressed hope.
When asked about the possibility of a fine or punishment for not using the bins, Habib said the people have to be given some time.
“After installing all the bins in the city, we may take steps against non-users,” he added.
The bins have so far been installed in Chowhatta, Zindabazar, Noyasharak, and Bondorbazar areas, among others.
Korim Uddin, who lives in Upashahar area, said, “This is the first time bins have been installed in Sylhet city. So, many people do not know about how to use those.”
He said that apart from the SCC, many social organisations also came forward to raise awareness about using dustbins and keeping the city clean.
