Slain Comilla Victoria College student Sohagi Jahan Tonu’s mother Anwar Begum yesterday claimed that her husband was being barred from talking to media. “Tonu’s father is not being allowed to talk to media. We’re not saying anything against the government. We’re just seeking justice. Our cable line has been disconnected so that we can’t watch news over Tonu’s murder,” she alleged. Tanu’s father, Yaar Hossain, is an employee of the Comilla Cantonment Board. He lives in the quarters within the cantonment. Tonu’s mother also alleged that army personnel took away everything that were related to her daughter. “They even took her diary and photo album,” an emotional Anwar Begum said.
She also claimed that her daughter was killed due to her refusal to perform at a musical program. While addressing a human chain marking the three months of the gruesome killing, Tonu’s mother Anwar Begum also renewed her call to arrest the killers of her daughter, as police were not successful to come up with any headway in their probe into the murder case.
She wondered whether they would be deprived of justice “just because they are poor”.
Comilla chapter of Ganajagaran Mancha, a platform demanding the trial of war criminals, organised the human chain at Kandhirpar area in Comilla town.
Bangladesh Communist Party’s Comilla district secretary Paresh Ranjon Kar, freedom fighter Motaher Hossain Babul, Tonu’s brother Anowar Hossain, among other, addressed the programme.
Tonu, a second year student of History department and member of Victoria College Theatre, was found dead in a bush beside a culvert inside the Comilla Cantonment on March 20.
On March 30, Tonu's body was exhumed from her grave for collecting DNA sample, fresh postmortem and proper investigation into the case.
Later, members of Crime Scene Unit of CID brought the DNA and other samples of teeth, nails and body to Dhaka for examination.
On June 12, revealing the second autopsy report, doctors at the Forensic Department of Comilla Medical College Hospital said they did not find any specific cause of the death of Tonu in their second autopsy report, but got the ‘sign of sexual intercourse’.
