GAIBANDHA: Speakers at a function underscored the need for awareness, early preparedness, education and knowledge
to all to reduce risks of natural disasters amid changing global climatic conditions, reports BSS.
Due to geographical location Bangladesh has become one of the most vulnerable countries in the world and lives and livelihoods of the people are under threat owing to river erosion, floods, cold wave, cyclones, and drought, they opined.
They came up with the comments while addressing a seminar on disaster management organized by district administration at the conference room of deputy commissioner (DC) yesterday with DC M Abdus Samad in the chair.
Besides Gaibandha and four other districts under greater Rangpur, its adjoining areas are also at the risk of earthquake as it is situated in the seismic zone, the speakers said.
In the seminar, the district level officials, who work during the pre and the post disaster period to mitigate the sufferings of the people and save the lives of the domestic animals, presented their strategies during the period.
Civil surgeon Dr Nirmalendu Chowdhury, district livestock officer Dr Abdul Latif,
additional deputy director of Department (Plant protection) of Agriculture Extension Matiur Rahman, district relief and rehabilitation officer Habibur Rahman and Kamarjani union parishad chairman Abdus Salam Jakir and journalist Sarker M Shahiduzzaman spoke at the function, among others.
Earlier, the speakers stressed on standing beside the persons with disabilities to reduce their risks during the natural disaster as the persons with disabilities are the integral part of the society.
DC M Abdus Samad urged all to expedite disaster preparedness programmes among the people of the disaster prone areas to reduce the loss of lives and property during any emergencies in future through coordinated efforts of all concerned.
