A Mymensingh court yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in 2012. The court also fined the convict identified as Ashraful Islam, 28, of Gandappur village in Muktagacha upazila, Tk 10,000. According to the prosecution, Ashraful, a day labourer, married Rekha Akhtar, 19, daughter of Billal Hossian of Nayanbari village of Phulbaria upazila, in 2011. Since the marriage, Ashraful used to torture his wife for dowry. Following the ongoing feud over dowry, Ashraful locked in an altercation with Rekha in the morning on January 18 in 2012. At one stage, he stabbed Rekha with a knife, leaving her dead on the spot. Victim’s father filed a case with Muktagacha Police Station on the following day. Later, Ashraful confessed before the court of killing his wife. After examining witnesses and record, District and Session Judge Helal Uddin of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict.
