Mehdi Hassan Tapu slammed home the all important goal of the last quarterfinal match in the injury period to lift Team BJMC in the semifinal of the Walton Federation Cup Football tournament outplaying the Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra yesterday.
Held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, after the win, BJMC will meet Arambagh Krira Sangha in the first semifinal on June 23 while Abahani will face Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra in the second semifinal on June 24.
However, in the match of equally strength opponents Team BJMC and Muktijoddha the former were a bit ahead to shot on target and to create scoring space when their Nigerian recruit Samson Illiasu and Shaikat Mahmud’s effort were very remarkable.
Illiasu after beating defensive midfielder Bipul and left back Tanvir Rana with a solo effort took a powerful right foot shot but his attempt narrowly missed the cross piece on 25th minute.
Two minutes later Shaikat squandered an easy chance from inside the box when the ball came to his way with Shoeb Meah released a through pass on his way to goal bound but the forward failed to keep his attempt into post on 27th minute.
Muktijoddha, despite enjoying the ball possession almost evenly could not produce any real chance to score but a long range try from Towhidul Alam Sabuj at late hour of the opening session.
After the goalless first half, both sides looked aggressive to win the match but could not make enough spaces inside the area to score goals.
Samson Illiasu, who was operating in central midfield, created a string of opportunities for BJMC in the first half, was also real threat for Muktijoddha when trying to save his cross defender forced to make corner just on the first minute of the injury time.
Team BJMC finally snatched the show stunning all with Mehdi Hassan Tapu blasted a close range finish in the stoppage time of a veteran Abdullah Pervej corner to lift BJMC into the semifinal.
