The BNP yesterday reiterated its demand for a judicial inquiry into all “extrajudicial killings”, including the death of the prime suspect of the murder attempt on a teacher. “We've always opposed extrajudicial killings. We reiterate our demand for a judicial probe into all such deaths. Killings in the custody of law enforcers should be stopped immediately,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Addressing a press conference at the party’s Naya Paltan central office, Fakhrul termed the death of Golam Faizullah Fahim in an alleged crossfire a “drama”.
The BNP leader’s comment came a day after the killing of Fahim, 18, in an apparent crossfire. The killing has sparked widespread debates, condemnation, and criticism.
Mirza Alamgir said the police got the “licence” to kill people unlawfully once the government threatened to kill suspects in “crossfires”. “The police make maximum use of the threat issued by the Prime Minister,” he alleged.
The BNP secretary general termed Fahim’s death as “extrajudicial killing”, saying the nation cannot accept such killings in remand. “People would know the facts if the killers were brought to justice. But one might inquire if the government is involved with them (militants),” he added.
He criticised the Prime Minister’s statement on BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, saying that she (the PM) was trying to shift public anger sparked by the mass arrests and ‘crossfire’ killings by making negative remarks about the BNP leader.
Fakhrul termed the Prime Minister’s statement against Rahman as “vulgar, false, and provocative”, adding that it exposed “a feeling of vengeance”.
He claimed that the Prime Minister was annoyed with Rahman as he has obtained a strong position in Bangladesh politics. Rubbishing the allegation that Rahman had threatened the Premier’s niece Tulip, Fakhrul said no one could possibly get away with making such threats in a developed, democratic country like the UK.
