14-party rally causes massive tailback

Special Correspondent

The city witnessed a messy traffic situation yesterday afternoon in the wake of the political rally by the 14-Party Alliance. Hundreds of people were delayed by hours in their commute. Reporters of The Independent also faced difficulties in reaching office in Tejgaon from various parts of the city. Many who came by bus or rickshaw were stuck on the roads for over two hours. One correspondent took more than an hour to reach by motorcycle from the Jatiya Press Club, despite taking detours and driving on the pavement. The massive traffic snarl was an aftermath of the human chain programme of the ruling Awami League-led 14-Party Alliance, protesting against the recent spate of terrorist activities and killings across the country by militants allegedly led by the Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its main ally, the Jamaat-e-Islami.
The human chain started in Gabtali in the north of the city and extended to Jatrabari in the south. Lasting from 3pm to 4pm, it stretched across the city’s main thoroughfares, but left gaps at crossings for traffic to pass. However, hundreds of supporters marched on the roads to join the chain and hear the central leaders denouncing what they described as the evil activities by the opposition groups, who they allege are running a gauntlet of killings to haunt the country and are promoting the militants carrying out the killings. The traffic started to build up in central Dhaka even before the chain was formed at 3pm.
By 2pm, Topkhana Road was gridlocked and the traffic was unable to move towards the city centre down the Paltan crossing, mainly because the chain participants had started to gather at the Gulistan area near the Awami League central office at Bangabandhu Square. By 3pm, the traffic chaos was complete. Buses tried to make their way through the jam by taking detours through the alleys and lanes, but found themselves stuck in the gridlock, the bulk of which was formed by the ubiquitous rickshaws carrying the homeward rush-hour traffic.
