The Ministries for Road Transport and Bridges and for Shipping are taking several measures to ensure that passengers can travel safely and smoothly in the Eid season. Stern action would be taken against owners of modes of mass transportation who try to charge higher fares during the holidays on the holy occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader announced yesterday. Meanwhile, shipping minister Shajahan Khan, at a separate meeting held at Motijheel’s BIWTA headquarters, said the BIWTA would introduce a new launch terminal in Western Sadarghat to ensure smooth journey for holidaymakers. He added that no passengers would be allowed to travel on the roofs of the launches.
“Transport owners tend to increase bus fares during the Eid season. The government has already reduced the fuel oil prices. Strict action would be taken if they try to increase the bus fares,” the road transport and bridges minister told reporters after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with China at the Secretariat. The minister said several monitoring teams have been appointed to keep an eye on various bus terminals and report excessive bus fares or other irregularities.
Eid-ul-Fitr is one of the biggest festivals for Muslims, Obaidul Quader observed, adding: “The government has taken steps to ensure that the homebound passengers can travel without hassles or difficulties.” The minister said all construction works on the highways across the country will be suspended 10 days ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr to ensure a smooth journey for the holidaymakers.“Temporary toilets will be set up at the ferry terminals and along the highways for the use of women and children
during the Eid holidays,” he added.
At least 1,000 volunteers will be engaged at 16 exit points across the city, Obaidul Quader said, adding that community police will be deployed at Abdullahpur, Tongi Station Rioad, Joydebpur Chowrasta, Vogra, and Mirer Bazar areas to reduce traffic snarls.
“The new terminal in western Sadarghat will be opened to the traffic before Eid. Three new pontoons have been installed at the terminal, and ticket counters have been opened,” Shajahan Khan told reporters after a meeting on Eid management. The meeting also decided that overloaded launches would not be allowed to leave the Sadarghat terminal, the shipping minister said, adding that launches would be required to stop taking passengers before exceeding the load limit. “Closed-circuit cameras would be installed at every launch terminal to ensure passenger security. The government has taken various steps to ensure safe journeys for people on the occasion of Eid,” the shipping minister said.
He also said launch-owners have been asked not to charge additional fares from holidaymakers on the occasion of Eid. He further said launch-owners are required to ensure that the master, driver, and other employees are present at the time passengers board the launches. “Movements of all vessels carrying cargo or sand have been disallowed after sunset,” he added.
