The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) took some major decisions in its two and half an hour long board meeting yesterday, some of which was essential in deciding the fate of the country’s cricket.
The board as expectedly extended the tenure of head coach Chandika Hathurusingha until the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. It came as a reward for Hathurusingha under whose guidance the national team made a dynamic improvement in limited over cricket. The board also increased his remuneration, making him the most expensive coach of the country has ever got. At the same time, the board also extended the tenure of the supporting staffs like assistant coach, fitness trainer, physio of the national team till 2019. At the same time, Hathurusingha became the part of selection panel which was split into two parts—a three member selection committee that included cricket operations chairman Akram Khan at its convener and team manager Khaled Mahmud Sujon along with Hathurusingha himself. The selection committee will approve the activities of three-member selection panel headed by Faruque Ahmed.
Habibul Bashar Sumon, a member of the selection panel was released from the panel and made the selector of the Bangladesh women’s team. He is the only one member in the selection panel. Sajjad Ahmed Shipon, a selector of Bangladesh aged level team was promoted to the senior member selection panel, led by Faruque Ahmed.
Former fast bowler Hasibul Hossain Shanto joined the aged level selection panel as a replacement of Shipon along with Hannan Sarkar and Ehsanul Haque Sezan.
However the split selection panel in the senior team sparked a widespread criticism but BCB president Nazmul Hasan Papon remained unfazed, stating that he had just legalized the form through which the selection activities were done in the past.
“As per the new selection policy, the selection panel will select the team and then they will talk to the selection committee over finalizing the team. This system is followed always but the new thing is that now we made it official. So there is no scope of criticizing the policy,” Papon told the reporters after the meeting.
The board also finalized the talk with two coaches whom they are considering as the fast bowling coach of Bangladesh team. Papon however didn’t reveal their name but said they have already talked over the terms and condition and financial matter with those two coaches, who gave their consent to guide Bangladesh bowlers.
The BCB chief also gave the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) clubs a 72 hours ultimatum to clear the unpaid amount of the players who officially and unofficially complained to the board. At this phase of the league, the players are supposed get the 60 percent amount but most of the clubs are yet to pay that.
“Stern action will be taken if the clubs didn’t pay the unpaid amount of the board. They are given 72 hours time to clear all those payments. If they don’t take action, we’ll clear the payment of the players and then will take action against the clubs. That’s final,” Papon warned.
Papon also formed a four-member committee headed by Jalal Younus, a former fast bowler and currently the chairman of media and communication to review the bowling action of the bowlers in the league in a bid to take an action against the chucker and helped them clear their action. Former leg-spinner Omar Khaled Rumi, fast bowler Golam Faruk Suru and Dipu Chowdhury are in the committee. They will review the video footage of the bowlers after the completion of the league and take necessary steps.
At the same time, the board formed another committee to look into the matter what happened during the DPL match between Abahani and Prime Doleshwar at BKSP. The match was postponed after umpires felt ‘sick’.
“The committee was given 72 hours time to give the report after talking to the players, umpires and other concerned. After their report we’ll take the decision.”
The BCB however decided in principle that the fourth edition of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) will kick-start on November 6. At the same time, the board has decided to take a legal action against BPL franchcise Sylhet Super Star whose bank guarantee wasn’t en-cashed. The franchisees are yet to clear the payment of the players.
