Police Academy to get IT centre to tackle growing cyber crimes

The government has taken an initiative to set up an IT centre at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, aiming to provide the trainee policemen with adequate IT knowledge to deal with the growing number of cyber crimes, reports UNB.
Bangladesh Police under the Ministry of Home Affairs has proposed a draft project titled 'Construction of Bangladesh-India Friendship Building and setting up an IT Centre at Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah' at an estimated cost of Tk 13.56 crore to the Planning Commission to this end.
Talking to UNB, a Planning Commission official said some 3,000 trainees receive training every year from the Bangladesh Police Academy while the number of IT-related crimes and the criminals are on the rise. "Now, it has become very much essential to acquire IT-related knowledge."
"The members of law enforcement agencies cannot discharge their duties properly for lack of necessary IT-related knowledge and experiences. Once the IT centre is set up at the Police Academy in Sardah then the trainees would be equipped with required IT-related knowledge," the official added.
He said this would help the law enforcement agencies enhance their capacity to detect the IT-related crimes and criminals. As a result, the number of such crimes will come down.
Under the present circumstances, the Home Ministry proposed implementing the project by Bangladesh Police in a bid to enhance the training capacity at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah and thus provide practical digital-based IT related training.
The official said the daft project has been proposed to be implemented with Indian grant. Under the project, there will be construction of Bangladesh-India Friendship Building, centrally-operated classrooms with visualization technology, introducing academy management software, academy software and data center, access control and security, internal optical fiber networking, and procurement of other necessary furniture.
 The Pre-Evaluation Committee (PEC) meeting on the proposed project was held on April 3 this year with Physical Infrastructure Division member of the Planning Commission Khorshed Alam Chowdhury in the chair.
Meeting sources told the news agency that the meeting discussed in details the funding of the Indian government as grant and decided to attach the concurrence of the ERD over the Indian grant and the signed agreement of the grant with the Development Project Proposal (DPP).
According to the Bangladesh Police Academy, it is the apex training institution of the Bangladesh Police. It is responsible for providing holistic knowledge, skill and attitude in policing to produce high quality police officer that is knowledgeable, competent and professional.
To achieve this mission, the Academy designs and delivers a series of need based training curricula at basic, in-service and specialized levels/courses to address and meet the needs and demands of modern policing as well as policing challenges of the globalised world.
