Court asks govt to identify water bodies
In a written order, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has directed the government to form a high-powered six-member committee led by a professor of BUET within 15 days to identify water bodies on the premises of Eastern Housing Limiteds Aftab Nagar-Banasree Project. It also asked the committee to submit within 45 days a list of water bodies and the amount of total land in the Aftab Nagar-Banasree Project.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division
headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha came up with the order on May 26. The written order was released yesterday.
There are more than 900 acres of land under this project. But most of the water bodies inside the project have already been filled up. The remaining ones are also being filled. The project is going to set a negative impact on the environment for sure, Advocate Manzill Murshid, counsel for the petitioner, told reporters after getting the written copy of the apex court order.
The Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking its directive over the housing project. But, the High Court, on May 10, rejected the plea. Later, the rights group filed an appeal against the High Court order.
