Teesta water sharing deal soon: Anisul

Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud yesterday told parliament that the Teesta water sharing agreement will be signed soon with India to ensure the equal share of water of the common river, reports UNB. "The framework of interim agreement of Teesta water sharing has already been finalised. It’s expected that Teesta water sharing treaty will be signed soon on the basis of equality, fairness and principle of harming no one," he said. The minister said this replying to a tabled starred question from Jatiya Party MP AKM Mayeedul Islam (Kurigram-3).
Anisul Islam said the government, assuming power in 2009, started negotiations with India over Teesta deal giving the highest importance.
The minister, however, said there had been no meeting of the Joint River Commission (JRC) in the last six years as the last (37th) JRC meeting was held in 2010.
In 2013, a JRC meeting was postponed at the eleventh hour as the then Indian water resources minister had conveyed his inability to attend it. Though India and Bangladesh share 54 common rivers, India so far signed only one treaty in 1996 over sharing of water of the Ganges.
