Yunnan University offers vast opportunities to students

Students from Bangladesh can explore the vast opportunities that the Yunnan University is offering to them, university officials told journalists here on Tuesday, reports BSS.
Established in 1923, the university is one of the oldest universities in Southwest China and is located in a natural surrounding near Kunming city.
“Besides local students, the university is now offering higher education opportunities to overseas students those are mostly from South Asia and Southeast Asian countries, including Bangladesh India, Nepal and Pakistan”, said Dr Yang Wei, the Director of the Office of the International Cooperation and Exchange. Dr Wei, also an associate professor of the university, along with some other senior teachers and high officials were briefing media delegates from South Asia and Southeast Asia on the academic curricula and the study opportunities for foreign students.
A group of foreign students from Bangladesh, India, Thailand, Nepal also attended the event and responded to journalists on various issues related to their study.
Some of the students observed that they found the education standard at the Yunnan University is good while the tuition fees, accommodation cost and incidental expenses are less than their home countries. A student from Dhaka said the university follows a strict enrollment rule, but many students from Bangladesh can get into the university if they learn Chinese language.
Dr Wei, however, said that learning Chinese is a pre-condition only to the courses those involve studying in Chinese language.
“We have many subjects at undergraduate, post-graduate and doctorate level in English and students don’t require learning Chinese for studying in those subjects”, he said.
Some students, however, suggested that the students would find it easier to get a job in China after completing their study if they accomplish a Chinese language course.
The university also offers full scholarships to the international students for many courses, but having certificate on Chinese language is a precondition to all the scholarships, according to the university admission manual.
The university offers courses and scholarships in many areas covering arts, commerce and science. Bangladeshi students can find most of the courses attractive and promising to shape a better future. Dr Wei said the university is currently focusing on meritorious students from overseas at the post-graduate level to meet the skill shortfall in various sectors in China. Regarding bilateral relation between Bangladesh and China in the education, Dr Wei told BSS that China has widened its focus on Bangladesh covering different areas of mutual interest including education.
