Khulna traders thumb nose at KCC monitoring team

STAFF REPORTER, Khulna

Prices of all essential commodities skyrocketed on the 3rd day (June 21) of the Ramzan sandwiching consumers despite adequate supply to local markets as traders have thum their nose at KCC’s monitoring committee formed to control price spiral. The surveillance by the KCC monitoring committee has created no positive impact on price situation as both wholesalers and retailers are ignoring instruction to hang price chart in front of their shops. As for instances, prices of sugar, edible oil, onion, garlic, lentil, dates and green chili have soared up two to three times more than what it was on June 17, two days before the Ramzan.  In this connection, on June 11 a 23-member daily necessities price monitoring committee has been formed headed by Chief Revenue Officer of KCC Md Moshiuzzaman Khan while market super Gazi Salauddin was made its member secretary. The meeting also decided to fix the wholesale and the retail prices of some major commodities and display the prices in the markets, major shops and wholesale hubs during the Ramzan. Mayor of KCC and chief adviser of market monitoring committee Md Moniruzzaman Moni has warned businessmen of stern action in case of any allegation with evidence of hoarding any kind of consumer items to enhance their prices for making fabulous profit. Brinjal which was sold in city kitchen markets at Tk 30 to Tk 40 per kilogram on Thursday (June 18) suddenly soared up to Tk 50 to Tk 60 from the first day of Ramzan. Prices of dates, fried rice (muri), flat rice (chira) shot up abnormally and green chilis have jumped up Tk 80 from Tk 40 per kg. Because, these are important ingredients to make iftar items for fasting muslims.
The prices of different brands of LP (liquid petroleum) gas have also soared up. A cylinder filled with LP gas of Jamuna Oil Company is being sold at Taka 1220 which was Taka 1120 a week back. When asked about reason for price hike, dealer Tobarak Hossain Topu said that its price would further go up in next one week. Because, supply is not adequate to meet the demand.
There is reason for raising prices of essential commodities which we can not disclose fearing reprisal. Because, we are always subjected to extortions by different political parties who force us to pay money for carrying out their political programmes said a wholesaler of onion and garlic on condition of anonymity.
It is the duty of mobile courts to contain price spiral of essential commodities as decided in the meeting held on June 11 at the conference room of Khulna City Corporation where all high officials of law enforcing agencies and civil administration were present, said convener of the task force Moshiuzzaman.
Mayor of KCC Moniruzzaman Moni hoped that good sense would prevail upon businessmen in selling
essential commodities within purchasing capacity of customers.  He called upon the leaders of the business community, in particular the retailers, to sell goods of daily necessities within the budget of the average consumer so that Khulna residents are not forced to delve deep into their pockets during in the holy month of Ramzan.
