Highway blocked, 10 hurt in clash with police

Hundreds of workers of a readymade garment factory in Gazipur staged demonstration in front of their factory demanding payment of their arrear salaries yesterday morning.
The workers also blocked Dhaka-Mymensing Highway at Board Bazar area in Gazipur city that suspended vehicular movement on the highway for half an hour. The workers locked into a clash with police while police tried to disperse them from the spot to clear highway. At least 10 workers injured during the clash.
Workers, witnesses and police sources said the workers of Nandan Apparels at Kathora area of Gazipur city staged demonstration in front of their factory yesterday morning demanding payment of their arrear salaries for the month of May. At one stage, workers attacked the factory and vandalized the glasses of window and furniture. They went out from the factory campus and put barricade on Dhaka-Mymensing highway.
As a result, the vehicular movement on the busy highway was suspended for half an hour. On information, Gazipur industrial police rushed to the spot and tried to disperse the workers from the highway that triggered a clash with them. Police opened blank fire and hurled tear shells and charged baton on workers. A chase and counter chase took place during the clash, leaving ten workers injured who were rushed to local clinics.
