EC imposes fees for NID correction, renewal

Election Commission (EC) yesterday issued a gazette notification fixing the fees for services relating to the National Identity (NID) cards—including correction or renewal—from September 1 this year.
These range from Tk 100 to Tk 1,000 for various services. However, these services are free till July 31.
“The citizens will have to pay for NID card service, including correction and renewal, from September 1. A gazette has been published in this regard,” Md Sirajul Islam, EC Secretary told The Independent.
The EC said that these services (such as replacement of damaged or lost NID cards) will be available after applying to the NID Registration Wing with a pay order or online payment to the EC Secretary.
The NID card will be issued free of charge for the first time. It has a validity of 15 years, after which it has to be renewed with a fee.
The fee for the renewal will be Tk 100 and for urgent service Tk 150.
If the card is lost or damaged, the applicant will pay Tk 200 for normal service and Tk 300 for urgent service.
If the card is lost or damaged a second time, the fee will be Tk 300, and Tk 500 for urgent service. After that it is Tk 500, and Tk 1,000 for urgent service.
According to the officials of NID Registration Wing, 20-25 per cent of the voters have cards that need to be corrected.
They add that the department is working under a heavy workload as not only because new cards have to be issued every day, but old ones have to be corrected as well.
For making corrections in NID cards, the fees will be Tk 200 for the first time, Tk 300 for the second time and Tk 400 afterward that. Government organisations and statutory bodies will have to pay Tk 5 lakh as one-time fee if they want to access the NID database. They will also have to pay Tk 1 lakh as annual service charge.
The Election Commission has already signed agreements with Bangladesh Bank (BB), the National Board of Revenue (NBR) and the Department of Immigration and Passports for providing citizens-related information.
The EC says that it will also sign agreements with two law-enforcing agencies—Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the Police—to share the NID information for tracking criminals.
Individuals can also verify the accuracy of their own NID data by paying a fee of Tk 100. If an individual or organisation wants to access someone else’s date, the fee will be Tk 200.
At present there is data on about 9.62 crore voters in the NID database.
