Govt itself giving rise to militancy: Khaleda

UNB

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday alleged that the government itself is conspiring to destabilise the country through spreading terrorism and giving a rise to militancy, reports UNB. She also alleged that the country is now in a very bad shape as Prime Minister Sheik Hasina is giving importance to those who had killed and made disappeared many Awami League leaders and activists after the country’s Liberation War. “She (PM) assures foreigners that she would curb terrorism. But she won’t do it actually. She wants to make the country unstable through spreading terrorism and giving a rise to militancy. She is doing all these things deliberately,” Khaleda said.
She was addressing an ifar party organised by Association of Engineers, Bangladesh at International Convention City Bashundhara in the city. The BNP chief also alleged that police are harassing innocent people and BNP men, and doing a ‘brisk business’ in the name a combing operation. “Huge extortion and ‘arrest business’ is going on in the name of a drive.”
She also claimed that around 2,200 BNP leaders and activists are among around 8,000 people arrested in the first three days of the ‘crackdown’ that began on Friday morning. Voicing her concern over the growing incidents of target killing, Khaleda said the Prime Minister claimed to have information about who are carrying out such incidents. “Why is not she arresting them when she is aware of them? They’re now arresting common people and leaders and activists of BNP and other opposition parties by either hiding the perpetrators or sending them abroad.” The BNP chief also alleged that the government has turned the entire country into a jail and harassing people in this holy month. “The country’s people now want to get rid of this corrupt, killer and repressive regime.” Pointing at Samajtantrik Dal (Jasod), Khaleda said the real killers are with Awami League. “There’re some people with Awami League who are very experienced in killing and making people disappeared. Awami League had also been with them in the Liberation War when BNP was not founded.” After the Liberation War, she said the people of this party (Jasod) had killed and made disappeared many Awami League leaders and activists. “They used to make indecent remarks about Awami League’s leader (Bangabandhu). But, forgetting this, Hasina is evaluating these killers and tormenters dropping her own party men. That’s why the country’s condition is so bad.”
