A Dhaka court yesterday framed charges against 18 people, including Sohel Rana, his father and mother, in a case filed for violating the building code in constructing the nine-storey Rana Plaza, which collapsed in April 2013.
Additional chief judicial magistrate, MD Mostafizur Rahman, also fixed August 23 for starting the trial proceedings against them. Among the accused, three, including Sohel Rana, are now in jail. Ten others, including Rana’s parents, are out on bail, while the rest have gone into hiding. The 13 accused pleaded not guilty and demanded justice after charges were read out to them. But the court rejected their petitions and framed charges against them.
On the morning of April 24, 2013, Rana Plaza, which housed five clothing factories, a shopping mall and a bank, came crashing down, leaving at least 1,136 people dead and about 2,500 injured. After the disaster, the police filed a case against the building owner, Sohel Rana, and owners of the five clothing factories under Sections 337, 338, 427, 304 (b) and 34 of the Penal Code. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed another case on June 15, 2014 with the Savar police against 17 people, excluding Rana, under Section 12 of the Building Construction Act 1952. ACC deputy director SM Mofidul Islam, investigating officer of the case, submitted the charge-sheet to the chief judicial magistrate's court in Dhaka. The commission included Rana's name in the charge-sheet as it found evidence of his involvement in violating the building code. On June 1 last year, after concluding the investigation, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police had submitted the long-awaited charge-sheets before the chief judicial magistrate of Dhaka against 42 people, including Sohel Rana, alias Kulu Rana, his father Abdul Khaled, alias Kulu Khaled, and mother Morzina Begum. In the two cases, 41 people were charged with murder in one, while 18 were charged with violation of the building code in the other. Of the 18 accused in the building code violation case, 17 were also named in the murder case. According to the case statement, the building authorities had obtained permission for a six-storey building, but later extended it by three more floors.
