Two alleged murderers of a newly elected union parishad (UP) chairman were killed in a gunfight with the police in Joypurhat Sadar upazila early yesterday. They were identified as Shohel Rana (25) and Monir Hossain (26). Police officials claimed that Rana and Monir were allegedly involved in the murder of the newly elected chairman of Badsha UP, AK  Azad, on June 12. They were also wanted in several cases filed for snatching and extortion with Joypurhat Sadar police station.
Talking to The Independent, Mollah Nazrul Islam, superintendent of Joypurhat police station, said three policemen, including Sadar police station officer-in-charge (OC) Farid Hossain, were injured during the gunfight. They have received primary treatment, he added. A police team, acting on a tip-off that a gang of criminals was planning to attack the house of slain AK Azad, raided Gopalpur village around 4am. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the criminals opened fire, leaving three policemen, including the OC, injured.
Both Shohel and Monir were killed on the spot in the ensuing gunfight. Later, police recovered a firearm and some sharp weapons from there. On June 4, some miscreants had stabbed and shot Azad in Gopalpur village. The newly elected UP chairman eventually succumbed to his injuries at Popular Hospital in the capital eight days after the attack. Azad was elected chairman of Badsha union in the UP election held on May 28. A total of 3,115 people, including 26 alleged militants, were arrested across the country on the fourth day of the ongoing special drive. This takes the number of total arrests to 11,648, of them 145 alleged militants, during the last four days of the special operation. Of late, 12 people have bee killed in gunfights with law enforcers across the country. The gunfights took place in the capital along with Rajshahi, Brahmanbaria, Bogra, Jessore, Gaibandha, Sathkhira, Narail and Joypurhat districts following the recent murder of a police superintendent’s wife in the port city of Chittagong. The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested two top leaders of the banned Islamist outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) from the capital yesterday. They were identified as Md Mozahidul Islam and Md Ariful Islam Solaiman, alias Arafat.
