According a report in this newspaper yesterday, the detective police detained an alleged drug peddler along with 8,000 yaba tablets from Kawrakandi Ferry ghat area in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur district on Sunday. This seizure of drugs is just a tip of the iceberg; countless more yaba tables enter into the country and are consumed by mostly the young people. In fact, drug menace is spreading its tentacles in the country. Starting from the capital city down to the remote villages everywhere phensidyl, heroin, yaba and other drugs are available.
The tendency for taking yaba has increased among students of colleges and universities due to its aphrodisiac and stimulating qualities. Even female students are no exception. Most of the drugs are entering into the country through the porous borders. According to sources, there are more than 100 phensidyl producing factories on the borders of India from where thousands of bottles of phensidyl are transported to Bangladesh everyday and are sent to different places of the country. The people connected with the vicious trade have amassed fortunes not caring a fig for its disastrous impact.
Heroin comes through the airports while Yaba comes through 40 to 50 points of Cox’s Bazar district. Yaba is produced in the factories that have sprung up on the Myanmar borders. A section of dishonest members of law enforcement agencies allegedly facilitate the entry of the drugs into the country in exchange of bribes. That’s why the dubious business is thriving in the country.
Drug addiction can destabilize peace of a family; it can even ruin a family totally. The addicts can go to any length: they can commit various crimes like theft, robbery and mugging to manage money for buying drugs. So, this menace should be combated before it is too late. Parents can play vital roles in shaping the moral characters of their offspring. Educational and religious institutions and imams of mosques can also play their respective roles in resisting drug addiction.
The government should take stringent measures, including stoppage of the sources of the drugs. While members of the law enforcing agencies are urged to combat the menace broadly, the borders should be checked first. Moreover, the drug addicts should also be properly rehabilitated. More drug rehabilitation centres must be set up under government and private initiatives. Once an addict comes back to normal life there is hardly any chance for him/her to get addicted again. Massive awareness needs to be created among various segments of people, particularly among youths and teenagers, about the detrimental effects of drugs.
