Five get life for acid attack

An Acid Crimes Control Tribunal here yesterday convicted five people and sentenced them to life imprisonment for throwing acid on a housewife and her two daughters on May 19, 2007.The convicts are Bacchu Miah, 30, Hanif Miah, 22, Rukku Miah, 25, Jamal Hossain, 60 and Buruj Ali, 25, all residents of Ramrani village in Dhurgapur upazila.The court also fined them Tk one lakh each.According to prosecution, the convicts threw acid on Sheuli Akhter, a housewife of the same village, and her two daughters on May 19, 2007 over enmity, leaving the trio critically injured.Later, Sheuli filed a case on May 25 accusing five of them. After examining the records and eight witnesses, Additional District and Sessions’ Judge Abdul Hamid, who is also the Judge of Acid Crimes Control Tribunal-2, handed down the verdict.
