A mobile court yesterday fined the Mohammadpur outlet of mega shop Meena Bazar in the capital for selling frozen meat and displaying advertisements for tobacco products. “Meena Bazar was fined for violating two sections of the existing law. A large cigarette advertisement was displayed at Meena Bazar, which is illegal. They were fined Tk 100,000 for the offence,” according to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) official Aziur Rahman “It was also against rules to refrigerate beef. They have been fined Tk 50,000 under Section-43 of the consumer rights law,” said Rahman. Contacted, Meena Bazar Manager Abu Saleh Musa Khan admitted that his branch was fined by the mobile court.
On Friday, mobile courts conducted by the district administration in Chittagong fined five mega shops, including Meena Bazar, Tk 100,000 each for selling rotten meat and fish, and charging higher prices than normal. Earlier, on May 11, the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) under the food ministry, started its function by conducting mobile courts in the capital. On that day, a BFSA mobile court fined several mega shops, including Meena Bazar, for selling substandard food items. Meena Bazar was fined Tk 3 lakh for selling rotten fish, meat and other food items past their sell-by dates and its officials concerned were sentenced to three months’ jail in default of payment of the fine.
