The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would decide the fate of the match between Abahani Limited and Prime Doleshwar, a Dhaka Premier League (DPL) game which was postponed following the umpires’ denial to officiate it.
While it was alleged that the on-field umpires Gazi Sohel and Tanvir Ahmed felt threatened to run the game due to the Abahani supporters and players aggressive approach, the match referee Montu Dutta’s report stated that both of the umpires were ‘sick’ and was not in a position to stand in the ground.
“In his report, the match referee wrote that the umpires are sick and not in a position to run the game. He doubted whether they could officiate even today, the reserve day. So he wrote to us that the match cannot take place,” CCDM coordinator Amin Khan said yesterday, adding that they league will continue as to earlier fixture.
“We have informed all the clubs that the league will continue as it is, with this match being postponed. We have referred this game to the board, who will now take the decision. They will also decide on the umpires. We informed them that the two teams were ready to play, but the match couldn't be held due to the umpires' refusal to officiate.”
It was indeed unprecedented move in country’s cricket that the umpires refused to officiate match even though it was initially claimed that Abahani players abused them to such extent that they felt vulnerable.
According to the close sources of the umpires, Abahani skipper Tamim Iqbal’s behaviour was such ‘unsporting’ that they felt threatened at one point.
But that cause of leaving the ground seemed to be ridiculous specially when they didn’t refuse to officiate the match during the batting of Abahani as Prime Doleshwar’s Nasir Hossain involved in altercation with umpires for which the game was stopped twice.
Tamim later said that he was surprised by umpire’s move and couldn’t figure out why they left the ground when they have the option to report his action.
The players’ abusive word to the umpires in the cricket world is not new but the way the umpires reacted in the wake of this incident is completely a new thing. Just less than 24 hours of the incident the umpires however withdrew the claim what they made unofficially.
Amin Khan said he only took the match referee’s report in consideration and that he didn’t hear about any player or supporter’s rowdy behaviour towards umpires.
“I don't know anything about the incident. I will only see the match referee's report. It didn't contain anything about any team, player or supporters creating chaos. He only wrote that the umpires were sick, and that he never faced such a situation. The match referee left the decision with us, and we referred it to the board,” he said.
“I have nothing to comment on what's there in the media. All I can say is based on the match referee's report. The umpires committee or the board can decide on appointing a new umpire if they find the umpire’s fault in this case.”
The incident that triggered the umpires’ leaving the field occurred in the 16th over of Prime Doleshwar's chase when Raqibul Hasan was given not out by umpire Gazi Sohel off a stumping appeal from left-arm spinner Saqlain Sajib. The Abahani players protested and their fans began to hurl abuse at the umpires, at which point they left the field after consulting with match referee Montu Dutta.
Abahani were all out in 191 in 42.4 overs after being sent to bat first. Prime Doleshwar were 59 for two in 17 overs before the incident was taken place.
