Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu yesterday said Bangladesh is developing an industrial park exclusively for Chinese investors as he invited them to relocate labour-intensive industries to the South Asian country to take advantage of its duty- and quota-free access to many international markets, including China itself.
"Bangladesh has the best investment packages for foreign investors and a hard-working work force. BEPZA is in the process of setting up a special economic zone at Anwara in Chittagong for Chinese investors. Chinese investors can benefit from 'buying back' produced goods as we enjoy duty and quota free access to China and many other developed countries," Amu said while addressing the International Production Capacity Cooperation Forum of the 4th China-South Asia Expo in Kunming, capital of China's southwestern Yunnan province.
Mentioning China as Bangladesh's trusted neighbour and trade partner, the minister said bilateral trade in 2010-2015 reached US$10 billion, but the volume mostly comprised of imports from China.
Amu said the huge trade gap could be addressed by more Chinese investment not only in Bangladesh's readymade garments sector, but also in industries such as ship-building, agro-processing, leather, renewable energy and ICT-telecommunication.
"It will be mutually beneficial, a win-win situation," the Bangladesh minister said, echoing Beijing's mantra about expanding regional trade and investment cooperation under its 'one road, one belt' initiative.
China is now the world's largest manufacturer of consumer goods and equipment, and one of the biggest investors, with huge foreign exchange reserves.
Ning Jizhe, deputy director of National Development and Reform Commission, a sponsor of the forum, called for more trade and technology transfer between Yunnan province and South Asia.
”We have cutting edge technological capacity, green energy and high-class medical services. Many South Asian commercial bank already have commercial bank outlets in Kunming. Yunnan is at the intersection of South Asia and China," Ning added.
Yunnan, which borders Myanmar and is the nearest Chinese province to Bangladesh, is rich in mineral, energy and biological reserves.
Ministers and delegates from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, alongside representatives from the local government and various Yunnan-based companies also attended the forum held at Wanda Vista Hotel in Kunming.
