The dry spell and heat of summer has been waned with the advent of the monsoon rain ushering a relief for the city dwellers.
The rain fall has not only brought relief the people from sweltering heat but also brought hope for the farmers of a good crop. Though they are afraid, if the rain continues for more than couple of days, it would hamper the growth and production of vegetables.
For the last two-day, city people failed to taste the sunshine. The sky was over crowded with clouds with intermittent rainfall and drizzling. There was also heavy rain Sunday night and yesterday morning.
The monsoon seemed to return to its own character after few years, said Dr Alim Uddin, principal scientific officer of Fruits Research Centre in Rajshahi.
Ashraful Alam, in-charge of Rajshahi Meteorological Office, informed there was 68.5 millimeter of rain fall during the last 24-hours in Rajshahi. They rain fall was due to the impact of low over the Bay of Bengal. The low might continue for one or two more days with intermittent rain fall in the district, Alam added.
However, the water logging at various places of the city is causing huge sufferings to the people of the city. The menace of mosquitoes and flies has also been increased due to water logging and there is apprehension of spread of intestinal diseases, informed Dr Abdullah Al Mamun Palash of Rajshahi Medical College.
For the last one decade, people of Rajshahi observed a ubiquitous climatic condition with no or scanty rain at the monsoon with extreme heat. There was also no flooding of even low lying lands and almost all water-bodies remained dried up round the year except two or three months during the rainy season.
This year, the summer season was also with its own feature of nor’wester and heat.
Minarul Islam, a farmer of Rajabari village under Godagari upazila, informed this year there was adequate rain fall than the previous years. Even, during the last Boro season there was plenty of rain falls saving the farmers billions of taka at the Barind region to be required as irrigation cost.  Even, the rain fall from the first day of Ashar is benefiting the farmers in many ways.
However; many farmers have already prepared their fields for sowing Aman seeds while the saplings of Aush are already ready to transplant in the fields, Islam added.
The rainfall will benefit largely the Jute, maize and vegetables like Patol, Gourd, corolla, Borboti, Jhinga, sweet gourd, Chichinga, pepper and turmeric.
However, lingering of rain for couples of more days, the vegetables would be damaged at the fields.
