The medical board of Comilla Medical College Hospital, formed to conduct autopsy of slain Comilla Victoria College student Sohagi Jahan Tonu, yesterday handed over the second autopsy report to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Police. The report, however, could not determine the cause of death and said it found evidence of sexual intercourse. Tonu’s family members have rejected the second autopsy report, as they found it to be similar to the first report that was also rejected by them.
Dr Kamoda Prasad Saha, head of Comilla Medical College Hospital's Forensic Department, who headed Tonu's second autopsy, said, “We could not identify the actual cause of the death as the body was highly decomposed.” The cause of death could be determined by circumstantial evidences and further investigations, he said adding that the medical board found evidence of sexual intercourse. Earlier, Faruk Hossain, a staff of the forensic department handed over the second autopsy report to Assistant Sub-inspector Mosharof Hossain at the Comilla CID office at about 10.45am, said Kamoda Prasad.
Meanwhile, Tonu’s father Yar Hossain, in an immediate reaction, rejected the autopsy report claiming that the second report is same as the first one. The second report was actually prepared as per the first report, he alleged.
“There is nothing new in the second report and it was written only to support the first autopsy report,” he said.
On May 17, CID disclosed that it found evidence of rape after performing DNA test on samples collected from Tonu’s body.
Earlier, doctors at the Forensic Department of Comilla Medical College Hospital in their first autopsy report did not find any sign of rape before the death of the girl. The report also could not determine the cause of death.
The second autopsy on Tonu’s body was done after the body was exhumed following a court order on March 28.
Sohagi Jahan Tonu, a second year student of History Department of Comilla Victoria College and member of Victoria College theatre, was murdered and her body was found in a bush beside a culvert inside the Comilla Cantonment on March 20.
The following day, victim’s father filed a case with Kotwali Model Police Station. The killing of the college student sparked widespread protests across the country.
