JOYPURHAT: Newly elected chairman of Bhadsha Union Parishad of Joypurhat A K Azad, 45, succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital in Dhaka yesterday morning, reports BSS. Azad sustained severe injuries when he was attacked and chopped by a gang of miscreants June 5 night at 10 pm. He was returning home at Kochkuri from Durgadaha Bazar by a motor cycle along with one Pabitra. The motor bike was stopped at Gopalpur by the masked miscreants who attacked Azad by sharp weapons. They also shot Azad by firearms.
As Azad’s companion Pabitra started shouting for help, one Nayan came forward to save the UP chairman. But he failed as the miscreants also attacked Nayan and chopped and shot him.
At this situation, local people came forward and the miscreants fled away. Seriously injured Azad and Nayan were taken to district hospital for treatment, and from there they were sent to Bogra Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. Later, both of them were shifted to Popular Hospital in Dhaka for better treatment. A K Azad died in this hospital this morning.
Azad was elected chairman of Bhadsha Union Parishad under Sadar upazila as an independent candidate in the second phase of UP elections.
Azad’s younger brother Enamul Huq filed a case with Joypurhat thana naming six persons. However, police could not arrest any until filing of this report.
Officer-in-charge of Joypurhat thana Farid Hossain confirmed the incident and said police already raided several places to arrest the criminals, but could not apprehend any.
