The High Court yesterday asked Awami League lawmaker Mustafizur Rahman Chowdhury from Chittagong-16 to surrender before a trial court by June 20 on charges of assaulting an election official. The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Amir Hossain came up with the directive after refusing an anticipatory bail petition filed by Mustafizur Rahman. Earlier, on June 1, Mustafizur Rahman, MP, and his aides allegedly attacked Banshkhali Upazila Election Officer Zahid Hossain at the local UNO office over the appointment of a presiding officer and polling officers for the Union Parishad election. The EC postponed election to 14 union parishads of under Banshkhali upazila the same day after the lawmaker assaulted the election officer. Following the incident, the victim lodged a complaint with the EC. The following day, the EC sent a letter to the OC of Banshkhali Police Station, asking him to file a case against the lawmaker and his aides. A case was filed on June 3 against Rahman over the incident. Banshkhali OC recorded the case mentioning the name of the MP and six to seven unnamed people.
