China-South Asia Expo, commodities fair begin in Kunming

The 4th China-South Asia Expo and the 24th China Kunming Import and Export Commodities Fair was kicked off yesterday, with the aim to promote trade and economic exchanges between China—Yunnan in particular—South Asia, Southeast Asia and the rest of the world.
Under the theme of ‘Amity, Sincerity, Mutual Benefits, Inclusiveness, and Win-win Cooperation’, the expo and fair, co-hosted by the Chinese ministry of commerce and the Yunnan provincial government, was inaugurated at the Dianchi International Convention Centre in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province.
Dignitaries from different countries, including the Maldives, Vietnam, Nepal, Cambodia and Laos, expressed their optimism in enhancing greater regional cooperation between China, South Asia and Southeast Asia by boosting sectors like trade, commerce, construction, industries and tourism, with Yunnan as the hub. They also underscored the need for the ‘one belt one road’ initiative to connect the region, focusing on international capacity cooperation and building an economic corridor.
Vice-premier of China, Zhang Gaoli, said the country wants to expand cooperation with South Asia and Southeast Asia through greater cooperation with other countries. “The expo is not only a window for showcasing products, it’s a platform for the mutual benefit of South Asia and Southeast Asia,” he added.
Speaker of People’s Majlis of Maldives, Abdullah Maseeh Mohamed, said the expo would boost trade and economic cooperation for mutual benefit of the countries of the region. “Collective efforts are necessary for the future goal of the win-win cooperation, which will ultimately help in the development of Asia,” he added.
Deputy speaker of Vietnam, Trinh Dinh Dung, said the expo offers potential opportunities to help establish the ‘one belt, one road’ initiative to promote cooperation.
Vice-president of Nepal, Nanda Bahadur Pun, said the expo can help enhance relations for economic, social and cultural benefits through mutual investment and cooperation.
He also said that poverty in the region would be history if peace and prosperity prevailed. “In today’s world, a country’s development is possible with mutual cooperation with other countries. Our combined efforts can bring economic, social and cultural benefits. China can play a role here,” he added.
Deputy prime minister of Cambodia, Hor Namhong, said, “The expo can be a remarkable platform for South Asian countries to enhance the economic, trade and tourism sectors.”
“China has reinforced mutual trust and friendship, which are conducive to increase trade and commerce for all,” he added.
“‘One belt, one road’ is much needed for South Asia, Southeast Asia and the world for greater cooperation in various sectors,” he said, adding that such regional cooperation would help the future generations.
Deputy prime minister of Laos, Sonexay Siphandone, said regional cooperation is very much needed in today’s world and Yunnan can be its hub.
Chinese vice-minister of commerce, Gao Yan, said the ‘one belt, one road’ initiative has been taken for economic and trade benefits, as this region has a unique geographical and cultural linkage.
The expo and the fair would continue until June 17 with the participation of government officials, business leaders, entrepreneurs, experts, and scholars from 89 countries and regions, as well as representatives of international organisations.
There will be 8,000 booths at the fair where different countries would showcase their products and items. Bangladeshi entrepreneurs have taken 24 booths to display and sell their products, including textiles, fishery items, etc. Besides, various contract-signing ceremonies will be held at the expo and the fair with the expectation of 10 per cent increase in the total contract value compared with last year.
There will be 12 related events this year, including the China-South Asia Business Forum, the China-South Asia Think Tank Forum, and the China-South Asia Technology Transfer and Innovation Cooperation Conference.
