The Premier Cricket Super League match between Abahani Limited and Prime Doleshwar at BKSP-3 was postponed after the umpires refused to continue the match. The on-field umpires Gazi Sohel and Tanvir Ahmed alleged they were obstructed by the Abahani supporters and players in their bid to continue the game.
The Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) is yet to decide when the game will be held. CCDM co-coordinator Amin Khan told media his committee can’t take any decision about the match of the match until they get the umpires’ report in their hands. “We can only give our official decision after going through the umpires,’ report said Khan.
The tricky situation kick-started when umpire Gazi Sohel didn’t respond to Abahani bowler Saqlain Sajib’s appeal of stumping against Doleshwar’s Roqibul Hassan in the 16th over of the game. Abahani Limited were shot out for 191 in 42.3 overs.
Abahani fielders protested the decision of umpire with the skipper Tamim Iqbal reacting aggressively. Abahani supporters also joined the players to mock at the umpires. However at the end of the over, those two umpires left the field after talking to the match referee Montu Datta. Doleshwar’s score was 59 for two at that moment.
After some anxious moment, the umpires entered into the ground and proposed the two teams to finish the game with revising the target as per Duckworth-Lewis method. With there is a reserve day and there was no natural calamity, the Doleshwar was reluctant to reach a consensus with the decision. Thereafter there was no way to restart the game.
“It is now out of our hands. The CCDM will take the decision about the match,” said match referee Montu Datta.
Abahani coach Khaled Mahmud Sujon held the umpires responsible to stop the match, stating, “Umpires can’t leave the ground because there was no situation created that they could feel threatened. They can deal with the situation more astutely.”
Sujon had no reservation about the decision of Doleshwar which refused to play the match as per revised target.
“As per the D/L method, the target will be tougher for them so it’s logical that they would refuse to continue the game.”
Doleshwar coach Mizanur Rahman on the other hand said, “Since the game wasn’t stopped due to our fault, there is no reason to accept the D/L method.”
