Legends of Rupganj got off to a brilliant start when they overwhelmed Mohammedan Sporting Club by a comprehensive 104 runs in the opening round of the Super Six in the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.
Elsewhere, at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah, Victoria Sporting Club cruised to a 23-run win over Prime Bank Sporting Club in the high-scoring Super League encounter.
By virtue of the victories, Victoria Sporting Club, who had finished the group phase with top- the highest 15 points and Legends of Rupganj-who had finished fifth with 14 points, notched in total 17 and 16 points respectively. In fact Legends took a sweet revenge of their first phase defeat at the hands of MSC.
Both the matches were delayed due to bad light and held on curtailed over basis. The 45-over match in Mirpur delayed for one hour and 30 minutes, while Fatullah’s 40-over match was delayed for two hours and 15 minutes. And so
Rupganj vs Mohammedan
After winning the toss, Mohammedan captain Mushfiqur Rahim chose to field and let to make first use of his bowlers in the unpredictable surface of Mirpur, where his bowling battery could not halt the progress of Legends of Rupganj. They compiled 232-8 in 45 overs with Mohammad Mithun making 59 runs. In its pursuits, Mohammedan were bowled out for 128 in 31.5 overs.
A 89-run opening stand of Soumya Sarkar and Mohammad Mithun, which provided a solid ground for the fellow batsmen. After the fall of Soumya, who made 40 off 43 with four fours and one six, the team faced a mini-drama as they lost four wickets in the space of 28 runs when they were stuttering at 129-5.
Braving the mini-collapse, Sajjadul Haque thereafter shared a 61-run sixth wicket stand with Mosharraf Hossain Rubel, who came back from one match suspension. Before being dismissed, Sajjadul hit 24 and Mosharraf made 32.
Finally, Legends Indian recruit Pawan Negi and Alauddin Babu set a target of 233-run, where Negi contributed 28 not out.
Naeem Islam was the most successful bowlers of Mohammedan, claiming four wickets for 31. Thisara Perera took two wickets for 35.
Chasing the target, Mohammaden Sporting Club lost two top-order batsmen cheaply. Hamidul Islam tried to tackle the batting collapse with Mushfiqur Rahim and stitched a 43-run for the fourth wicket. Both the well-set batsmen walked back in the gap of five runs. Hamidul fell for 37 and Mushfiq chipped in with 34. Then no other batsman made a bit resistance against Legends’ bowlers and skittled out for 128.
Alauddin Babu, Pawan Negi, and Nahidul Islam picked up two wickets each for Legends of Rupganj. Mohammad Mithun was adjudged man of the match.
Victoria vs Prime Bank
Opting to bat, Victoria Sporting Club piled 272 for six in the allotted 40 overs thanks to in-form Abdul Mazid (72) and Mominul Haque (55), after which Prime Bank managed to score 249-8 with Mehedi Maruf making 55 and Nurul Hasan scoring 52.
After losing Fazle Mahmud (13) cheaply, Victoria struck an 83-run through Abdul Mazid and Mominul Haque. Before having dismissed, both Mazid and Mominul pulled off their fifty. Mazid topscored for Victoria with 72 off 68, clubbing 10 fours and one six. Mominul made 47-ball 55 with four boundaries as many as sixes.
Later, Nadif Chowdhury in association with Chaturanga de Silva added 66-runs for the fifth wicket stand, which crossed about the 250-run mark. Nadif clattered three big sixes before being run out. De Silva clobbered two sixes and three fours in his 23-ball 39-run knock. Dolar Mahmud remained at stumps at 18.
Mohammad Azim took two wickets for Prime Bank.
In reply, opener Mehedi Maruf and Shanaj Ahmed gave a good start for Prime Bank Cricket Club as they added a 55-run for the opening stand. Then their scoring spree has been slower when Shehan Jayasuriya trapped into run-out. Therefore, wicketkeeper-batsman Nurul Hasan Sohan tried to build up a big partnership but he didn’t get ably support from the other end. When he run out for 52, Prime Bank were on 172 for five in 26.5 overs.
Later, defending champions lost their five remaining wickets to put up 77 runs on the board when they were sprawling at 249 runs. Mahbub Alam snapped up two wickets for Victoria. Abdul Mazid was named the player of the match.
