The High Court (HC) yesterday asked police to submit by August 4 a full investigation report over the assault and public humiliation of schoolteacher Shyamal Kanti Bhakta in Narayanganj. The superintendent of police (SP) and the officer-in-charge (OC) of Bandar Police Station in Narayanganj were asked to submit the report. The court also set August 7 for the next hearing. The HC bench of justices Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Md Iqbal Kabir gave the order following a prayer made by the SP and OC seeking more time to submit the investigation report. Deputy Attorney General Motaher Hossain Sazu submitted the petition with the HC on Wednesday. On May 13, local MP Salim Osman forced headmaster Shyamal Kanti Bhakta to squat holding ears in presence of a crowd of several hundred people on his Piyar Sattar Latif High School premises for alleged blasphemy. A government probe committee, however, found the allegation to be false later. The lawmaker from main opposition Jatiya Party faced flurry of criticism from across the country for the public shaming of the teacher. In face of the criticisms, the lawmaker later admitted his wrongdoing but denied to seek an apology from Bhakta. The HC, on May 18, asked the authorities concerned why lawful measures should not be taken against MP Osman and others who publicly humiliated and insulted the teacher. The court also asked the authorities, including the home secretary and IGP, to reply to its order within two weeks.
