Mustafiz starts rehabilitation

Pace sensation Mustafizur Rahman's availability for his stint with Sussex looks further bleak as he started a two-week long rehabilitation yesterday following a routine set  by the physio in a bid to improve his fitness levels.
Mustafizur had undergone a number of fitness tests after returning home from Indian Premier League (IPL), where he played a starring role for Sunrisers Hyderabad. The fitness tests though revealed no serious problems, it had indicated that the pace sensation had lost a plenty of weight. He returned to Dhaka after taking rest at his Satkhira village home.
The BCB sources said he would continue the rehabilitation for the next eight to 10 days after which he will go though another fitness tests. The physio then will submit a report on his condition and based on that report the decision on him will be taken.  On the first day of the programme, Mustfizur spent some times in the gym. He will rehab two hours in every day.
The Fizz as he was fondly called by fans, sustained a hamstring injury during the IPL and missed one game. He had already fallen into injury thrice in a career, spanning just over a year.
Bangladesh's physiotherapist Bayjidul Islam said the focus of the first week was on fitness and not cricket training. It was learned that Mustafizur will be assessed again after eight days while his rehabilitation will extend for two weeks.
"We will take a decision on him when we see his improvement," Bayjidul said. "For the first week I don't see any possibility of him taking the field. We are working on his hamstring and ankle injuries. He has recovered from the shoulder and side strain."
Bayjidul and Bangladesh trainer Mario Villavarayen rechecked Mustafizur's physical condition. There was slight concern about the bowler's weight but Bayjidul said he was happy with the current measurements.
Mustafizur had been drafted by English county side Sussex for the ongoing Natwest T20 Blast. He was actually supposed to join the county after his IPL stint, but Sussex granted him leave to recover from his niggles and his IPL exertions.
The final decision on whether he will travel to England will depend on his fitness.
In March, Sussex had announced that Mustafizur would be their second overseas player and participate in the NatWest T20 Blast and the Royal London One-Day Cup. The Bangladesh bowler was scheduled to join the Sussex squad at the end of the IPL but had been eager for a break after playing 16 matches for his franchise, Sunrisers Hyderabad. Mustafizur, who was the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the tournament, was also named the emerging player of IPL 2016 and missed only one game in the tournament.
Meanwhile, The Argus, a Hove based newspaper reported that Sussex would learn when Mustafizur Rahman will finally arrive at Hove in the next few days.
The Bangladesh star was originally due to link up with the Sharks for the second game of their NatWest T20 Blast campaign against Somerset last Wednesday.
That date was pushed back to tomorrow’s clash with Kent at Hove to give the 20-year-old time to return to Bangladesh for a rest following the Indian Premier League but he will not feature in that match either.
Sussex have moved to retain South Africa all-rounder David Wiese as their second overseas player alongside Ross Taylor for the next three games in the NatWest T20 Blast as the uncertainty over Rahman continues.
The left-arm seamer is unlikely to feature until the game against Kent at Canterbury on June 30 at the earliest although Bangladesh national team physio Baizidul Islam has raised doubts over the likelihood of Rahman coming to England at all.
Chief executive Zac Toumazi said: “Mustafizur is still contracted to us but Bangladesh want to satisfy themselves he is in a good condition physically before they give him clearance to come over.
“There is nothing suspicious about it. He has had a tough few months and they are keen to wrap him up in cotton wool as he is such an exciting prospect.
“The ball is very much in their court but we are in regular contact with Bangladesh. We have covered ourselves by extending the contract of David Wiese but we are expecting to hear Mustafizur’s expected arrival date any time now.”
