Detective Branch (DB) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) yesterday placed before the court Abu Nasor Gunno, the only person arrested in connection with the murder of Mahamuda Khanam Mitu, and sought a 7-day remand to interrogate him. However, the court wanted to know the basis on which Abu Nasor had been arrested, and asked the CMP to submit before the court all documents relating to his arrest. The remand hearing has been scheduled for Sunday by magistrate Abdul Kader.
The DB sought remand to question Gunno over the murder of Mitu. The court asked the investigation officer (IO) about evidence on the basis of which Gunno was arrested. “Gunno had been present at the scene of the murder, as revealed by tracking his mobile number,” said Nirmalendu Bikash Chakraborty, assistant commissioner of police (prosecution).
“The court wanted to know why the documents were not presented before it, and ordered that the evidence related to Gunno’s arrest be submitted to the court. The plea for the hearing has been scheduled on Sunday,” added the assistant commissioner (prosecution).
At a press briefing yesterday, Devdas Bhattacharya, additional police commissioner (crime and operations) of CMP, said they have seized the black microbus that followed the motorcycle when the miscreants left the place soon after the murder, and have arrested its driver, identified as Jane Alam, 50, hailing from Solimpur Sitakunda of Chittagong.
However, the progress made in the case was not clear. The family members of Abu Nasor Gunno have claimed that Gunno’s rival group has implicated him in the case. They insisted that he has no involvement in the case.
Bhattacharya replied that these allegations were untrue. “We have arrested Gunno on the basis of specific information,” he added. However, he could not elaborate upon the information or about Gunno’s involvement in the murder.
He also said: “Gunno is an activist of Jamaat-Shibir.” Nevertheless, he could not specify Gunno’s rank in the group.
On Sunday morning, around 6:45am, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, wife of Babul Akter, superintendent of police (SP) of Dhaka police headquarters, was stabbed and shot dead by a group of motorcycle-borne miscreants within 100 yards of her residence at the GEC intersection, when she went to drop off her children at the school-bus stop.
