Activists of Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit Bangladesh Chattra Leauge (BCL) allegedly beat up a journalist on the campus on Wednesday night over a trifling matter.
JU on the other hand BCL has also suspended Mohitosh Roy Tito from the organization for assaualting the newsman., says a press release signed by JU unit President Mahmudur Rahman Jony and the secretary Razib Ahmmed Rasel.
The injured was identified as Shafiqul Islam, the Jahangirnagar University Correspondent of online news portal www.bdnews24.com and a fourth year student of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies. Shafiq is also the assistant general secretary of JU unit Students Union, sources said.
Eye witnessed said a youth who was being interrogated for allegedly kidnapping a girl, 24, inside the security box of the Dairy Gate. During the interrogation, Mohitosh Roy Tito, the religion affairs secretary of JU BCL, attempted to rescue the youth, but left the spot after being barred by Shafiq along with other journalists. After a while, Mohitosh Roy Tito returned to the spot along with several BCL activists and attacked Shafiq. They beat him up with iron chain and rod at the main entrance (Dairy Gate) of the campus around 10pm on Wednesday, according to the witness.
The other attackers were identified as Ekram Uddin Omi, Masters student of marketing department and Subrata Kumar Saha of statistics department, Biplob Hossain and Bayzidur Rahman, 3rd and 4th year students of botany department, Sifat Ahmed Ratul, 3rd year student of biotechnology and genetic engineering department, Pritom Arif, 3rd year student of History department, Topu Sultan, Abdullha Al Faruki Imran and Fahad, 2nd year student of the same department, Azmusahan Nowroz and Alamin, 3rd year student of Geography and Environment department, Ekram Nahid, statistics 3rd year and Robin Sarkar, statistics 2nd year.
All of these BCL activists are loyal to the JU unit BCL President Mahmudur Rahman Jony and resident student of Mir Mosharraf Hossain hall. Shafiq was rescued by his fellow journalists and was rushed to Savar Enam Medical College Hospital after given primary treatment at JU Medical Centre.
Meanwhile, a written compliant, signed by Shafiq seeking justice, has been submitted to the Proctor around 5.45pm yesterday, confirmed Prof Tapan Kumar Shaha.
Earlier, the students and teachers of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies formed a human chain on Shaheed Minar premises demanding exemplary punishment of the attackers.
