A Gazipur court yesterday convicted three people and sentenced them to death for killing a schoolboy after abduction in 1996.
The Judge of Gazipur Additional District and Session Judge Court Mohammed Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan handed down the verdict. The convicts are identified as Ataur Rahman alias Ata, son of Abdul Hai of Saldoi village under Kapasia upazila in Gazipur district, Alam Hossain, son of Hashim Uddin and Mohammed Yousuf, son of Kafil Uddin, both are the from same village.
According to the prosecution Gias Uddin, 15, son of Mohammed Abdul Baten Bepary of Saldoi village under Kapasia upazila in the district and also a student of class seven of Ghagotiachala High School was abducted by the convicts on September 5 in 1996. The abductors later demanded Tk 50,000 as ransom from victim’s father and threatened to kill Gias if failed to pay money.
But victim’s father Abdul Baten Bepary did not pay their demanded money. He filed an abduction case with Kapasia police station against five abductors after a day of the incident.
Later, the abductors killed Gias Uddin and concealed his body. Police arrested an accused Yousuf and later, according to his confessional statements recovered the skeletons of Gias Uddin in a sack from Madholi Beel (Water body) of the area after three months of his abduction.
Police arrested all accused in the case and submitted chargesheet against them before the court.
After a long hearing, the court sentenced Ataur Rahman alias Ata, Alam Hossain and Mohammed Yousuf to death and also fined Tk 10,000 to each.
On the other hand, the court give release order to Jooj Mia and his wife Someja Khatun alias Bilkis as it was not proved their involvement with the incident.
