City traffic in a mess

Special Correspondent

Like the first day of Ramadan, day two also saw traffic coming to a grinding halt on the capital's streets, including the major thoroughfares, in the afternoon. People were rushing back home to break their fast with their near and dear ones ahead of Iftar.
Besides, hawkers occupying strategic corners of streets, spilling over from their usual places on pavements, and seasonal Iftar sellers contributed to the chaotic situation. Everyone tried to make it as fast as possible even without bothering about traffic rules, said a policeman, who was helplessly trying to manage the traffic at Mahakhali, where the situation was most severe with traffic arriving down the new flyover from Moghbazar to make it to the flyover to the airport.
It took over an hour for Independent Staff Reporter Anisur Rahman Khan to reach home at Mirpur Section 1 from the Tejgaon office of the newspaper down this part of the thoroughfare. He had to make it part on foot and part by bus to join his daughter and wife to break fast.
But young Information Specialist Raihan Ahmed was still on his way home at Elephant Road from his workplace at Uttara. He was making it through Banani after 5pm.  It took him an hour to reach Banani starting at 4pm from Uttara section 13 by bus, finally making it at 6:45pm.
Earlier, it had taken over two hours for The Independent Special Correspondent Deepak Acharjee to make it to office at Tejgaon from the Secretariat by bus. And for this correspondent setting out at 3pm from his home at Elephant Road, it took one hour by a car to make it to the Sonargaon roundabout.
But people in the know said the traffic situation would worsen in the days ahead when Eid shopping would begin in full swing.
