Three days after the murder of an SP’s wife in Chittagong, police yesterday were still clueless about the motive or the group involved in the crime.
Similarly, Jhenaidah police had failed to gather any clue on the killing of Hindu priest Anado Gopal Ganguly (69) by yesterday, 28 hours after the incident.
Speaking on the murder of Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, wife of SP Babul Akter, additional police commissioner (Crime & Operation) of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), Devdas Bhattacharya, said, “We cannot say with certainty which group was involved in the incident.”
The ACP, however, said that a man was arrested yesterday for his suspected involvement in the crime. Besides, a microbus driver was held and his vehicle seized allegedly in connection with the killing yesterday. However, police did not comment on the arrest.
“We have arrested former Shibir leader Abu Nasor Gunno, 40, on suspicion. Nasor is now associated with the maintenance of a shrine at Hathazari. We picked him up from the shrine,” he added.
Asked about any specific connection between Nasor and Mahmuda’s murder, Devdas Bhattacharya said, “He was present in the area during the murder. We will interrogate him to find out if he has any involvement in the killing or not.”
When quizzed further, the officer added: “We have some information but it cannot be made public right now.”
“The former Shibir leader was an accused in an abduction and murder case filed with Sitakunda Police Station. He had also lived in the Middle East for some time,” he said.
Also yesterday, Jhenaidah additional superintendent of police, Azbahar Ali Sheikh, said police were still hunting for clues in the murder of the 69-year-old Hindu priest and were yet to arrest anyone so far.
Following the priest’s murder on Tuesday morning, the victim’s son had filed a case with Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station against some unknown assailants yesterday.
According to police, three motorcycle-borne assailants had hacked the priest to death while he was going to a local temple at Karatipara village in Jhenaidah Sadar area.
The priest was cremated at Karatipara on Tuesday evening after post-mortem in Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital, his son said.
A US-based site has claimed that the Islamic State and the Bangladeshi branch of Al-Qaeda had claimed responsibility for the priest’s killing and other attacks against minorities in the country.
Police, however, denied the claim. “There is no existence of the IS in Bangladesh. These killings are the handiwork of local militants. They will be brought to book at any cost,” DIG (Khulna range) SM Maniruzzaman said.
