An elderly man was trampled to death by a herd of wild elephants while another died of cardiac arrest after being panicked at bordering Patharerchar village in Dewanganj upazila of the district yesterday morning.
The deceased were identified as Abdul Latif, 55, and Zahurul Islam, 60.
Police quoting local people said the pack of about 30-35 wild elephants came down from India on Tuesday night. On the following day while villagers tried to drive them, the herd of elephants trampled Abdul Latif to death on the spot at around 9 am.
Zahurul, a resident of the village, died of cardiac arrest after being panicked by the elephant attack. The elephants also destroyed the standing crops in the area.
Sensing the presence of the elephants, local people tried to drive them away in the morning. OC of Dewanganj Police Station Mostasinur Rahman said the bodies were handed over to their family members.
