LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain yesterday underscored the need for registering the birth of a child within the first 45 days, reports UNB.
“Though the overall birth registration rate is 87 per cent, the rate of registering birth within 45 days after a child is born is below 3 per cent. But in the developed countries, the registration is completed soon after the birth. We have to increase the rate, too,” he said.
The minister was addressing a workshop titled ‘Accelerating the birth registration rate within 45 days and use of birth certificates for preventing early marriage’ at the Bidyut Bhaban in the capital.
Noting that there remains the chance for changing the birth date without birth registration, Mosharraf said, “Under such circumstances, the tendency of child marriage will increase apart from a rise in the number of underage labourers going abroad.
