The High Court yesterday fixed June 15 for delivering its order on death references and appeals of the convicts in Awami League lawmaker Ahsanullah Master killing case.
After concluding hearing on the death references and appeals, the HC bench comprising Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice Krishna Debnath fixed the date for delivering its order.
Led by pro-Jatiya Party Jatiya Chhatra Samaj leader Nurul Islam Dipu, gunmen shot and killed Ahsanullah, also the president of Jatiya Sramik League, and Omar Faruq Ratan, a young man, and wounded 17 others in May, 2004 in a staccato burst of fire at a biennial conference of Awami Shechchhasebak League in Noagaon near the legislator's house in Tongi. His younger brother, Matiur Rahman, had filed a murder case with Tongi police the next day of his killing.
A Speedy Trial Tribunal on April 16 in 2005 handed down the death penalty to 22 people, including the main accused, BNP leader Nurul Islam Sarkar, and life in prison to six others for the high-profile murder. Of them, 17 are currently in prison. Two of them have died, while nine other convicts are on the run. Later, the convicts had filed appeals with the HC at different times seeking acquittal of the charges. Since then, the case has been pending before the HC.
The HC bench has started the hearing on the appeals on January 21 this year and wrapped up the final hearing yesterday.
Advocate Khandaker Mahbub appeared for the appellants while Deputy Attorney General Rona Nahrin represented the state.
