Mobile courts of Chittagong district administration in several drives at Khatunganj market and several other kitchen markets fined seven different organisations to Tk21.10 yesterday.
As part of on-going market monitoring during Ramadan, Chittagong district administration is conducting several mobile courts at the largest commodity hub Khatunganj market and several other kitchen markets of the city every day.
Executive Magistrates of Chittagong district administration- Abdus Samad Shikder, Tahmilur Rahman and Hasan Bin Md Ali led the mobile courts at Khatunganj market in Chittagong with the help of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB and Consumers’ Association of Bangladesh (CAB). During the drives, the mobile court fined Mir Group, a sugar wholesaler of Khatunganj market Tk 20 lakh for price manipulation.
The mobile court also sealed off the office of Mir Group in Khatunganj market.
Executive Magistrate Tahmilur Rahman said Abdus Salam, managing director of Mir Group and Jane Alam, sales manager of the same enterprise were fined Tk 20
lakh. “After verifying the documents, it was discovered that Mir Group purchased sugar at Tk 46.80 per kg and sold at Tk 58.50,” said the executive magistrate. The same mobile court also fined Masud Brothers of Khatunganj commodity market Tk 50,000 for price manipulation.
Meanwhile, Executive Magistrates-Abdullah Al Mansur and Touhidul Islam jointly conducted mobile courts and fined four errant kitchen traders Tk 30,000 for not hanging price charts and manipulating prices at the city’s Sholoshahar Karnaphuli Kitchen Market.    
The errant traders were identified as Jalal Ahmed, Shahidul Islam, Md Shahjahan and Md Illius were fined with Tk 10,000, Tk 5,000, Tk 5,000 and Tk 10,000 respectively under Consumers Rights Protection Act.  
While conducting the mobile court at the kitchem market, the executive magistrates asked the traders to show purchase documents on asking.
The Executive magistrates also assured the consumers of conducting the mobile courts against unscrupulous traders throughout the holy month.
